I’m 52 and feeling fabulous! As I’ve grown older, I have learned to shake the fear of what others think (for the most part lol) and embrace myself, quirks and all. I love the freedom! I’m free to do things I love, dress and behave the way I want, and love fiercely. I can now appreciate all of my many blessings and the beauty in my life!

Mandy https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2021/5/mandy I don’t remember being very happy as a child. There were fleeting moments of feeling happy—sunny southern days and melting popsicles, a good book on a rainy afternoon, making homemade cookies, spending the night at my Grandma’s house. But when I look at my youth as a whole, the little blips of happy memories struggle to emerge, like I am trying to make bubbles from a lukewarm bath that does not have enough solution to create the luxurious, fluffy, joyful, relaxing bubble bath I was expecting. I can certainly find happy moments, but overall, my childhood is not one I would ever relive. It might have been circumstances, or my own melancholic and guilt-ridden temperament, I really don’t know. The fringes of gray that surround my childhood carried over into adulthood. In my stormy early thirties, something happened. At the time, I had four small children at home, was living far from family, and my husband was working very long hours. I remember snatching a few moments to myself in the evenings to run errands like grocery shopping. On one such errand, on a balmy summer evening, I was listening to music and had the windows down in my cheerio-sprinkled, clanky old minivan. As I dropped overdue library books off, a thought enveloped my mind: “Drop the books off and keep on driving. Just drive away and don’t look back.” The immediate feeling of joy and excitement that I felt at the thought of just leaving this life behind and starting over was jarring. In the following days, throughout the stillness of napping moments and the endless monotony laundry-foldings and dish-doings, I self-flagellate by asking over and over again, what kind of a mother and wife would even consider—no matter how briefly—leaving everything behind? What is wrong with me? It was then that I decided something had to change. I had to change. I had wasted ¾ of my life feeling like I was missing something, and less-than, and that if only circumstances could change, I would change. What a shame! I began consciously changing my thought patterns. Instead of waking up and immediately dreading a new day, I made the choice to be thankful. I would mentally thank the sun for shining, my body for being alive, my children for existing, my husband for loving me, my house for being cozy, and so on. There is a saying that “Gratitude creates abundance” and I wholly believe this. The universe has been so kind to me. I am so very grateful every day for all the many blessings and joys in my life. I have learned that if things do not go the way I want or imagine they should—it’s really, truly going to be ok. When I saw the picture Eva took of me mid-laugh, I was moved to tears. At 40, I can finally laugh with abundance. One of my students recently asked me, “Why are you so happy all of the time?” and it made me pause for a moment. I was so grateful he asked me that. I just smiled and told him that there are so many things in life to find happiness in. Happiness is in abundance, if only we keep looking.

Tiffany https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2021/5/tiffany

I grew up in KS, where I met my husband, Robb, of almost 27 years (30 total with dating – but who is counting). We moved to NC shortly after we married and then to GA. We run our landscaping business together. We have two beautiful daughters, Sydney & Sadie. I love spending time with my family and going on adventures together.

In this season of my life with a half-empty nest and the other in her teens not “needing” mom so much, I am finding myself again and going after things I love. In my early 40s after coloring and highlighting my hair for many years, I chose to stop coloring my hair. With the encouragement from my hubby and our girls, I decided to try to embrace my gray, my new sparkle, and let it go all-natural. I have days I feel really old with it and days that I love it. I have also found a new groove for the past few years getting involved with the local film community. I started acting, modeling, and assisting with background casting and crew for films that come to our area. I love being part of a creative process and watching all the moving parts come together. My other loves are painting with acrylics on canvas, dabbling in photography, and going to the beach. I also absolutely love to watch the sunrise and set when I can.

I am 48 – this is me.

Victoria https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2021/4/victoria

Since turning 40 I have felt a subtle shift in accepting who I am as a person. Owning my flaws, showing my scars, and embracing beauty often categorized as “untraditional.” I am learning to no longer apologize for existing and trumpeting my own strengths. Self-deprecation for the sake of others or willowing to allow others the hero role in my life is no longer an option. The scar on my left arm is a memento of both my strength and a reminder I am the heroine in my story. The summer of ’88 my older brother and I decided to become amateur pyro-techs. We spent many merry days firing off bottle rockets at each other and then decided – well, he decided - to go on to making pipe bombs. In the days before school bombings and terrorist attacks, this was just something impetuous children did with their Wacky Wizard Chemistry Kits. Somehow my brother and I, working as his little assistant, managed to build what he would later refer to as the “minus A-Bomb” and he blew up our backyard fort - and me. I remember distinctly knowing I was aflame, smelling my burning hair and flesh and my brother throwing me on the ground, with the screamed commands of “Stop, drop and roll.” I don't remember anything until I was in the hospital being examined for third-degree burns.

Strangely, while the event did happen - my scar stands as evidence I was present for everything - the sequence I remember - and would swear to - is not correct. Years later my brother would correct my re-telling and related the container we built the bomb in struck him in the head knocking him unconscious almost simultaneous to the initial explosion. The voice I heard screaming instructions was most likely my own as I attempted to gain control of the situation. According to both he and my mother, I ran myself a bath of cold water made colder with ice cubes, revived my brother, and told him to get help while I submerged my charred arm in the tub. My mother and brother’s recollection makes me seem so heroic yet for decades I favored the story that makes my brother the hero. Why? I liked the idea of being saved, rescued from uncertain danger by my loving brother and it allows him to escape from total blame. Putting the event down in word is an exorcising of little girl demons. It doesn’t diminish the love and admiration I have for my older brother. It does, however, claim my power. I am no fair Juliet, no maiden in need of rescuing….I am my own hero.

Growing Together While Apart https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2021/3/growing-together-while-apart

"Not a stitch of makeup. Not even on my wedding day."

It's been a very long time since my mom and I had a portrait together. I was talking to her over the phone and she mentioned she'd never gotten a professional make-over before. I told her it's because she doesn't need one, she's a natural beauty. She said, "Ya, but I want one. Just to see!"

"Life is what happens while we are making other plans."

When was the last time you were photographed with your Mother? I took my mom's annual visits for granted. Covid happened and I wondered what was the last actual photo I had with my mother and I had a small moment of panic. It had been ten years, either I was behind the camera or she was. There were a few candid images but nothing of just the two of us for an entire decade.

All The Feels https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2021/1/all-the-feels

Today I found myself crying in my potato salad when this song came on over lunch.

When You're My Age

Lori McKenna

When you're my age

I hope the world is kinder

Than it seems to be right now

And I hope the front page isn't just a reminder

Of how we keep lettin' each other down

When I was your age, things didn't seem to be this hard

Riding bikes out on the street, playing tag in the back yard

You'll outgrow your shoes

You'll outgrow your bed

You'll outgrow this house

Just don't forget

When you're all grown up

But you don't feel that way

You're still gonna be my baby

Even when you're my age

Impromptu photo session with my baby.

A few days after the session Taylor sent me a frantic message saying I might have been the last person to photograph her mother alive. She just tested positive for Covid. Luckily her mother recovered. And Taylor and her mother now have a beautiful up to date portrait of each other.

Ben's Bees https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2018/5/bens-bees OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Ben has been beekeeping for just two years; he already has an impressive collection of hives. I'm a total newbie to beekeeping. I just bought the Flow Hive 2, so I was very grateful to have the opportunity for a little hands on beekeeping experience. I met Ben through our local beekeeping association. We both agree on having as natural hives as possible. Ben says he treats his bees, not with chemicals, or pesticides, but with TLC and love. He's a strong believer that a smaller bee is a healthier bee.

Prepping the smoker but honestly, I'm not sure we even needed it. Ben's bees seem very happy and relaxed. He says it's more of a hello to say he's there. Safety gear Ben recommends long light colored clothes, and a hat with a vale. I wore gloves as well. He says protecting your nose and eyes is crucial and I totally agree.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Busy bees bringing home the pollen. A small entrance to the hive helps the guard bees inside protect the hive from honey robbers.  The bees didn't mind me getting close to the hive as long as I stayed out of their flight path which is Southwest. Ben noticed that the bees don't seem to like to harvest pollen from the close by flowers. He was right, honey suckles were right outside of the hive and they just seemed to fly right by.

Here's a worker bee sticking her butt up in the air to release a pheromone. Some of the other bees came up to check what she needed and report it back to the colony.  Clever little thing realized the roof had gone missing. Queen bee pheromone smells like lemongrass and the alarm odor from the workers smells like bananas. I didn't get close enough to notice what smell this bee was making but Ben says she was releasing her pheromone to help guide the bees back to the hive. If bees are always attracted to you maybe check if any of your skin care products contain lemongrass, they might think you are a queen bee.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Look closely and you will see baby bees in their cell.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA These brood cells looked different from the other cells. Ben explained that the round one was a drone cell, a male bee, and the biggest one was a queen cup, it didn't contain an egg or any royal jelly. We were nearly through the entire hive and still had not spotted the queen but with the last couple of frames to inspect she showed up. She's the one with the red dot marked on her back.

A swarm! I couldn't believe my luck, a swarm happened in a different hive behind us.  Bees swarm when the queen leaves the hive. There may even be more than one queen in the swarm Ben says. A swarm is the healthiest part of the hive that leaves when they have outgrown their current home. He had a few empty hives on hand to capture this swarm.  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Looks like more bees for Ben!

Picky Redhead https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2017/6/picky-redhead I'm a photographer and I began soaping this year. I don't sell my soap, maybe in a year or two I'll try making it into a small business but right now I'm enjoying learning through trail by bubbles.  Making soap has begun to change my lifestyle for the better. I started a garden because I want to grow things for my soap. I'm crafting and pressing flowers that I forage, and I'm learning something new almost everyday. It's liberating walking into a store and passing all the plastic bottles, and synthetically scented soaps while thinking to myself, "I like mine better."

*Photography tip: Having a foreground adds depth but make sure your subject is sharp and in focus.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA To me what goes in my soap is just as important as what doesn't. As my soaping alter ego name implies (Picky Redhead) I've grown rather selective.

 I don't use palm oil.

In 2014 I traveled to photograph the Mondulkiri Project, an elephant sanctuary in Cambodia. All the roads in Cambodia are horrible, even the highway is a dirt road. I found it curious, when I entered the Mondulkiri region, which is forest and jungle, that the roads are brand new and pristine. Turns out the logging companies had big plans for the area. They were buying the lands from the natives for less than $5,000 usd intending to make palm oil and rubber plantations. For the natives this would be a lot of money but they had no financial management skills so what would end up happening was they would buy a motorcycle and a smart phone and in 6 months the money and their land was gone. A clever man named Mr. Tree had a better solution. He convinced the locals to not sell their land to the logging companies but instead rent the land to him for an elephant sanctuary. Saving elephants from a life of enslavement and abuse from the tourist ride industry.

Palm oil is in everything because it's cheap; in reality, the cost is much greater than what is in our wallets. So no thanks, call me picky.

Want to buy bananas for elephants, or rent part of the forest? You can find more info by clicking on Mondulkiri.

*Photography tip: Props add information to a product so make sure everything in the image is relevant to your subject. Avoid fake and plastic items. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  I began researching the how to's by typing in "how to make soap" in good old Google and YouTube. The quality of advise varied greatly but after watching many great videos and many not so great ones, I had a good idea of what I wanted my first soap to be like and what I wanted to avoid. No artificial neon colors, no glitter, no fragrance or perfume oils. Yes to a simple, unscented soap. Carrot, ginger soap was my first with Sea Buckthorn oil.

Yes, it was love at first soap but I thought that would be it until I used up the first batch. Silly me. Before the first was even cured I was on to the next experiment, a red wine soap and my first try using essential oils. I chose lavender. Don't worry, the wine was horrible but instead of it going down the drain, it went into soap.

*Photography tip: The eye will naturally go to the lightest part of the image. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

* Photography tip: Shoot in diffused or soft light. I like to use window light when the window is in the shade.  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Mothers Milk Soap. Made with the last of my expired frozen breast milk.I was cleaning out the freezer and forgot I even had it. I  live in Germany, my husband is in the Army so I can take this where ever the universe might plant us next. Besides, the thought of just throwing it out made my boobs hurt. I had pumped it on Valentines Day so it really is made with love.

*Photography tip: Consistency can help strengthen your brand.   OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Felted using wool from a local sheep farm. I cleaned and combed the wool straight off the sheep. Buying wool and having it shipped seemed silly to me when there where sheep 3 km from me. I brought a bar of soap and the man from the sheep farm stuffed my bag overflowing with freshly sheered wool. He told me a man from France would pick up the rest of the wool the next day, send it to China to be cleaned, and then back again to sell it in Europe.

*Photography tip: Bird and bug. Shoot from the perspective of a bird, and then a bug.

A pressed forget-me-not on a shea butter and grape seed oil soap with a line of cocoa, wrapped in homemade seed paper also forget-me-not seeds, tied with wool from the local sheep farmer. Making seed paper was another first that I may have never tries if it wasn't for soaping.

*Photography tip: Step back, zoom in. Doing so will give you a shallower depth of field and a compressed look to your image.   OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Testing the lather of "Beer'ded Lady", my first beer soap, with a vegan shaving brush. Most shaving brushes are made from badger hair and come from China. The badgers are gassed in their dens by the trapper and then skinned, their hair mostly used to make shaving brushes. I opted for a synthetic brush instead. Call me picky. Wrapped in poppy seed paper and decorated with pressed elderberry blossoms. It smells amazing without any EO's added.

*Photography tip: Fill your frame, although I am also a fan of negative space but for products generally it's good to fill the frame. Just remember to keep it relevant to your brand.  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA "Dirty Hippie" Made with foraged stinging nettles, hemp oil, and scented with patchouli and bergamot.

*Photography tip: Don't forget the love, aka, editing software. Everything you see is edited so don't feel discouraged if your photos straight out of camera don't look like what you see online or in magazines. All those images get lots of extra love before being published.   OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA In photography, my favorite image is usually the last one I took or I say the one I'm about to take. I feel the same way about my soaps. I'm so excited to make my new favorite.

Cleansing My Creative Palate with Fungus https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2016/11/cleansing-my-creative-palate-with-fungus Cleansing My Creative Palate with Fungus

It began in October, the numbness. The sick feeling and lack of appreciation for my photography. For all photography. I couldn’t stand looking at my social media threads. If I saw one more photograph of a pretty girl, in a fluffy dress, standing in an abandoned house, I was going to vomit. Nothing I made was right, or alive. My work felt like a boring rerun.

I was in a rut. Unfinished projects were going to stay unfinished. Unreliable models had made me question the worth of my ideas. And then my mom came to visit.

We went for a walk in the forest. She showed me what you can find in deep, dark, self-loathing rut. Fungus! Beautiful, ugly, tiny, slimy, spongy, fungus. She stopped every few feet to photograph a new one and I thought okay let me try. Click.

The total excitement I experienced photographing fungus in the woods with my mom was so unexpected and so very needed. I found a palate cleanser. Dust off those fluffy dresses, sorry if I was harsh earlier. I feel better again.

Happy creating you crazy animals.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA I used a black piece of construction paper for a nice clean background. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA I underexposed all the images slightly and shot them with an Olympus OM-D E-M5II 12-40 mm pro lens.  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Behind The Scenes Witch https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2016/10/garage-witch OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA What does a witch do when it's too dark to go and light off a smoke bomb in the woods? Use the garage. Photokina https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2016/9/photokina OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I have a very poor internal compass. I must thank my Photokina navigator, my husband, without him I would have never made it to half the people and things I wanted to see.

First find of the day Richard Terborg! Amsterdam based photographer who I had the pleasure to meet last Photokina. A fellow loud soul and fantastic creative, Richard also shoots Olympus and told me that the Olympus booth was doing free camera cleanings. The best free find of the day, thank you Richard.   OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Oliver Schlichtherle found me and what a fantastic surprise it was! I had not seen Oliver since our epic adventures with Von Wong in Austria. Jen Brook  was also modeling at Photokina so it felt like a mini reunion. Oliver had printed off some of his work at the Canon printers, I wish I had brought some of my digital images, great free find Oliver.

Fellow Kaiserslautern photographer, Mang- Yee, scored me, a free ticket to Photokina from 3 Legged Thing thank you lady and thing! I then handed my camera in for the rest of the day for cleaning. In the meantime I chatted with Jen Brook, and finally met up with Karen Y.G. Photography who I've been chatting with on social media for a year and DIY Photography Udi Tirosh who I talked super secretly to about crazy ideas that need to happen. It was very exciting.

30 minutes before closing I got my super clean camera back, thanks Olympus, and meet up with these beautiful people  René Hildebrand, Yukio Tee, Katharina Heckel, and Thomas. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA     Then it was over. Golden hour had begun and Photokina was closed. I only made it to five of the nine halls. I did honestly have a tiny moment of what if I hide and stayed the night, while I visited the WC before leaving.   OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

But then I remembered I have a baby. Dylan was a good trooper but it was time to go home.

Gruss von Photokina 2016!

Surviving a Wedding vs. Surviving a Zombie Apocalypse https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2016/8/surviving-a-wedding-vs-surviving-a-zombie-apocalypse Zombies?

Maybe not the first mental image when you think about photographing a wedding, but humor me for a minute in this just for fun blog. Who knows it might help you survive your next event.

A special thank you to my bride and groom, Anne Marie and Patrick, for having a fantastic sense of humor and letting me use them for this blog.

Make an alliance.

I will never willingly do another wedding without a second shooter. Someone on your six is everything when it comes to surviving the night and capturing all sides of the special day.  Photos of the guys prepping in the morning across town by my second shooter Danielle.

Know what to pack and what to leave behind.

Weddings can be a marathon. They often start early in the morning with hair and makeup and the receptions run late into the night. Lugging around an overflowing bag of gear slows you down. Half way through the event you’ll be tempted to just stuff what feels like a bag of rocks under a table and be free of it, but that can be disastrous. Would you put your bag down in the middle of a zombie attack? Pack light, pack smart. I like to use a news gear belt. In the belt I have everything but my second camera. Including a small toiletry bag with items like a wet wipe, deodorant, tissue, small mints, blister band aids, a few bobby pins, a safety pin, a Twinkie, and a tiny pair of scissors. This bag is essential I can’t count the times I’ve needed to use it not for myself but for my bride and groom. For my main camera I’ve gone mirrorless. Not only is there less weight to carry, I can be a complete ninja and turn off all shutter sound for important moments like the reading of the vows. CLICK! CLICK! No more, those zombies won’t hear me coming. Pass the tissues please!

Bring lots of ammo.

I buy new memory cards every year. With the big storage space on one card, I want to make sure all those eggs are going to be in a new basket.

The double tap.

I love to set my camera on continues and go in for a nice clean double tap. Zombies might not blink but the rest of us do.

Know how to hide.

I pretend cameras shoot bullets. That helps me stay out of the way of the wedding video. Pictured below my zombie second shooter and the videographer.

Hermann The German https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2016/5/hermann-the-german OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA It's Father's Day in Germany and when I came across this man with all his beer I thought he must be celebrating. So out comes the camera, here goes let's meet the neighbors.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA "It's Weilerbacher beer! But it's empty." He says. He's cleaning the kegs to prepare them for the next brew which he brews in his house. By chance I had just met the local beer brewer and he lives down the street from me. Meet Hermann. "Herman the German."  I'm glad I brought my camera.

"Do you like wine?" Hermann asks me. Yes, Hermann, yes I do. He gifted me a Weilerbacher wine only 60 bottles were made in 2014. Mine is number 28. I was surprised that Weilerbach had a wine, there are no vineyards. I asked him where do the grapes come from. All over town from vines growing on houses including his own. What a treasure, I left this photo in color because the wine is such an amazing shade of red.

A moment later Uta came out. I think when the wine starts leaving the front door she had to come see where it was going! Thank you Uta and Hermann for letting me be a part of your day. It was very nice to meet you!

Meet The Neighbors Willy Wald https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2016/2/meet-the-neighbors-willy-wald The first time I met Willy he was out in his backyard sunbathing in a speedo. He asked if we were going to be the new neighbors. I instantly liked him.  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

His wife calls him "Willy Wald" Wald in German means forest. Willi has climbed some of the tallest mountains in the world and at age 67, still goes out wandering at least two times a week for 20km or more. His walking tip is to buy good socks. That is more important than good shoes he says.

In his man hut with photos of Nepal and Mt. Everest on one wall and Dubai on the other. Renata joins us and tells me stories of a lavish dinner in one of the tall Dubai hotels with gold covered food. Willy remembers exactly how much it cost but they both can't remember what they ate!

Willy and his wife Renata have traveled the world together. They have been to so many countries that when they tried to list them all to me they admitted they probably couldn't remember them all.

Willy started listing off the countries he's climbed mountains in. Nepal, Argentina, Switzerland, Austria, and Renada adds in Dubai, Russia, America, then Willy continues, Canada, Norway, Finland. Then Renata starts on the islands, the baltics, Canary's. Willy interrupts to tell me a gruesome story about the lions in South Africa. I said maybe it would be easier to list the countries you haven't gone to instead. Willy says New Zealand. They had bought tickets but were unable to travel do to an illness.

I don't know what their next adventure will be but I'm sure they will bring me back a postcard.

Meet The Neighbors The Degen's https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2016/2/meet-the-neighbors-the-degens "Krieg und Frieden."  War and peace. Said Brigitt to her husband of 55 years, Siggi. Their anniversary is on the 19th. "Too late to change now!" She adds quickly. Brigitt hates having her photo taken, since she was a little girl she has hated it. I'm sure when she sees this one she'll tell me again. Siggi is showing me the photos of Generals and other high ranking officers he gave haircuts to in his barber shop of nearly 50 years.  Brigitt is telling me which ones where her favorites.  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Siggi was born in this house on the 4th of July 1924, an 11 lbs baby.  He jokes that the Americans celebrate his birthday with fireworks every year. His parents built the house and his family has lived in Weilerbach for over 500 years. He has only spent three years away and that's when he met Brigitt. All the painting is the house including the one pictured below were painted by her.

Siggi's English is perfect. As he sits in his in home barber shop he tells me stories of flying F16 fighter planes in the US Air Force, and childhood memories of walking through the base which was just farmlands at that time to get a glass of milk from the farmers. He's always loved airplanes since he was a little boy. That's him in the photo below.  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA When Siggi retired from his barber shop in 2001, 124 people came to his retirement party. Including all the commanders, the mayor of Weilerbach, and Mark Welch.

What No One Told Me https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2016/1/what-no-one-told-me What no one told me about birth,

and I wish they did.

My baby shower was epic. There was laser tag,  and popcorn cake. My friends spoiled me with useful gifts and shared their birthing stories. I felt so prepared. I had my hospital bag packed and was ready to do 'this'.

The evening of November 4th my water broke. I was calm and knew my plan was to labor at home until my contractions were four minutes apart. I had been told that it could take a long time.

Ya, well it didn't.

My contractions kicked in within that hour and very quickly reached the four minute marker, we headed to the hospital, three minutes apart, two, one minute lasting for one minute came soon after. I had no break, no stop between contractions. I hoped that it was a sign that this would be a fast labor.

Ya, well it wasn't.

15 hours of brutal labor, a failed epidural and several failed attempts to fix it, and bad news. I would need surgery. The doctor said we have a stargazer who lost his way. A very romantic way of saying my little guy was face up and stuck. His head was swelling and he was under too much stress. I allowed myself a good cry. I never wanted to quit not even after 15 hours but this battle was not just about me so I agreed to the emergency c-section.

November 5th 11:45am little Dylan Stanley Creel, well not so little, 8lbs 2oz, was delivered. It turned out I had a few more hours of surgery to go through. I had surprises in my belly, a nice big cyst and two endometriosis growths.  As I lay in recovery grateful that I was pain free and already apprehensive about how long my anesthesia would last I thought, well I had done it, I had survived.

Fast forward two days. This is the part I wish someone would have told me about.

OMG I'm going to die! Call a Nurse! I can't do this!

Sitting on the toilet, soaked in sweat, shaking, and in agony I have my husband call for a nurse because I am afraid to poop. I'm afraid my butt will rip, my stitches will explode and I am going to bleed to death internally. No joke. It was that bad. The nurse tried to convince me that I'm lucky, that most women can't poop for four or five days even.  Most women? So this happens to most women? Why o why do they not tell you this. The constipation lasts for weeks ladies. W.E.E.K.S.

They say pack shower shoes in your hospital bag, what they really should be saying is pack prunes. You gonna need em dear. They are soft sweet little life savers. What should every mother be getting at her baby shower? PRUNES especially from her friends that have been there and done that. Why was that not one of the stories? Why won't anyone tell the poopy truth. Well the secret is out now. And you damn well better bet every baby shower I go to from now on will be gifted a pack of diapers and a pack of prunes.

Octoberfest is in full swing here in Germany. Lederhosen and dirndl wearing tourists from around the world and local German beer enthusiasts are flocking to Munich for the next coming days.

I'm happy to avoid it all together. Anything with lines to pee is a no thank you for me.  Jeku and Paula went last weekend to Octoberfest but wanted to have some photos taken locally with their awesome German threads, I was super happy to take them to a fortress in Wolfstein.

Luck would have it my village, Weilerbach, was having a mini fair as well so with the light fading on our fortress we drove back to Weilerbach for some fest food and games.

Kristin contacted me to plan a portrait session for her. I asked her why she wanted to have her portrait taken? What was the story behind the images we would create? Her response was one I never would have guessed. "Because, I almost died."

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Four months ago Kristin was in labor with her second child, a daughter. Everything was fine until it wasn't. She almost bled to death after her daughter was delivered.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA I remember a past doctor telling me that having a baby is the most dangerous thing a woman could ever do. But Kristin survived! She has a photo of her mother when she was 30, and now her children will have one too.

It was a hot clear sunny Saturday. I wanted to meet at the pool right as it opened because I thought for sure it was going to be a crowded day. I hoped we could claim a little corner for an hour or so before the Summer vacationers filled and churned the calm water.

Was I in for a surprise when we ended up having the entire pool completely to ourselves for over an hour.

Underwater with Jessica https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2015/8/underwater-with-jessica The hottest day of the week and I had an awesome underwater shoot planned with Jessica. I was packed, in my car and more than half way to the shoot when she called me and said we have a problem. The pool we planned to use is no longer available. So what was I going to do? I needed this shoot. I was hot, itchy, and pregnant. Not a good combination, and I was hungry. I picked up a big slice of cake from a local store at the very least there would be cake, and headed over to Jessica's house.

Two hours of watermelon, cake eating and plotting we had ourselves another pool. This one was a non chemical pool filtered naturally by rocks and plants.  I think the floating algae scatter added to the magic of the images and we had the best lighting! Good things came this time from waiting.

The Color of Water https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2015/7/the-color-of-water What is the color of water?

Water may appear crystal clear in a glass or from the surface but it's actually blue. The more water there is, the deeper the blue.  So, I custom white balance for my underwater shoots. My cameras, even the ones that have an underwater white balance setting don't seem to get it right. If you do not have a camera that can custom white balance try using a pink/rose colored filter on the lens.

Two ways how I get my CWB:

  •  I take the custom sample with a white balance lens cap in the water at the depth I will be shooting at. Pro's the white balance is spot on, cons if I move to a different depth I have to repeat the process taking my camera out of the housing for every custom white balance I do because I have to place and remove the lens cap.
  •  I hold up and photograph several blue gels with my white balance lens cap before getting into the water and use that to sample from the different shades of blue when in the water. This is my favorite method because it's darn close and saves me a ton of time.

If a camera can shoot in RAW the blue can be edited out in post but I like to get it as close as I can SOOC, straight out of camera. It saves time in post and it's safer, I know I got the shot and I can show my client straight from the back of the camera. And since many underwater cameras do not have the option to shoot in RAW, yet, knowing how to custom white balance for natural light underwater photography can make or break an image.

Follow my underwater and other adventures on 500px or Facebook. Happy clicking!

A look in the making of with Sofie and Jasmin braving the cold, hard, foggy floor to create hand shadows under Skye's dress. Skye also made the dress we used for the shoot.  Behind the scenes In a tunnel at Fort 8 in Antwerp Belgium. The tunnel almost created wings and a halo for our underground unearthly angel.  I used three strobes, colored with Rosco gels. One behind Skye one under her dress and one for a face light in front and slightly left.

The fog was created using the ColdFlow dry ice machine from Rosco.

Here's the same light setup unedited and without the gels.

I liked it with the gels much more.

Amsterdam https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2014/12/amsterdam A friend of mine asked me if I wanted to go with her on a little road trip to Amsterdam. She was planning on attending a dog show with her husband but he couldn't make it last minute. I've never been to a dog show and honestly I think they are kind of nutty but if I'm being honest with myself, I'm kinda nutty too.  So off we adventured.

This is Montana, a pit bull from Montana! She's a bad dog as you can clearly see. Her mommy and daddy make doggy treats at Bad Dog Bakery and Boutique. She could smell a fellow Montana girl and started showing off for me right away. This is Montana, a pit bull from Montana! She's a bad dog as you can clearly see. We had plenty of time to explore the city center in the afternoons.   One of the most exciting hours of the trip was meeting up with an old  high school friend. I had not seen him for 14 year and he just so happens to be currently working in Amsterdam. He wanted me to bring him Taco Bell. I think it's the strangest photo. Seeing my friend who has not aged a day holding a Taco Bell bag in front of a rather depressing monument in Amsterdam. A highlight of our trip. Visiting Loonse en Drunense Duinen. Summer Rain https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2014/7/summer-rain

It was a gray drizzly Summer day. A relief from the recent heat. I was longing to shoot in the even noon light. As luck would have it, Christine was off from work and within the hour we were out and ready to shoot. I love the contrast of the dry flowers with the wet day. A behind the scenes view of our set up. the backdrop did tip over a few times and ducks came to investigate hoping we might have some bread for them. The rain began to pick up again making lovely rings on the waters surface.

A funny moment for a solemn photo, we both started singing "If I die young." By the Band Perry. There's something almost alive about wet hair.

10 Reason To Be Thankful Novemer 10-10 https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2013/11/10-reason-to-be-thankful-novemer-10-10 For more 10-10 goodness here is Glenda's

On Joy & Sorrow

Then a woman said, "Speak to us of Joy and Sorrow."
      And he answered:
Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.
And how else can it be?
The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.
      -Kahil Gibran

It's one of those times when it looks much worse then it really is and for that I am truly thankful.

I'm thankful for wise women, modern medication, and kindness. I'm thankful for warm blankets and even warmer hands and the comfort they give.

I only took one photo for my 10-10 project, I almost didn't take any at all but I'm thankful that I did.

I'm thankful that the sun shone today and that I could go outside and enjoy it.

I'm so thankful that everything ended up being okay.

Thank you and have a happy Thanksgiving everyone.

With love,

Eva Creel Photography

The Box In The Attic https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2013/9/the-box-in-the-attic My life will someday fit into a box.

It will be put in an attic and collect a still blanket of dust.

Someone will stumble across it someday. They will be a stranger but not for long.

They will get married with me and watch my children grow.

And when the box is empty they may even miss me a little.

Inspired by the box in the attic containing the grey suit modeled by Nicholas J. Cormier, and the blue jacket modeled by the lovely Julia Altmayer.

I believe these photos to be the original owners of the clothes and maybe even the same suit.

September 10-10 https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2013/9/september-10-10 Every tenth of the month I take ten photos for my 10-10 project along with a few other photographers. This months project was nearly consumed with photos of half unpacked boxes. Our stuff finally made it over to Germany from Georgia and all in one piece. I was so happy to start unpacking, every box was a surprise! The joy of it all lasted about three days. Now I'm looking for any excuse I can get to get out of the house and away from this madness. A walk in the woods with fellow 'tog Mallorie from GND Photography was the perfect distraction. After a good lung full of fresh air and some absolutely gorgeous shots of Mallorie I actually got a lot done. Next check out Glenda's 10-10 project.

Don't Judge A Hill By It's Bunker https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2013/9/dont-judge-a-hill-by-it-s-bunker At first glance it looked like a small hill, lovely but nothing out of the ordinary really. Covered with tree's and fallen leaves like most small hills in the area, tucked cozy in between newly developed houses in the small town of Kindsbach Germany. But this little hill isn't ordinary, because this hill has a door, and behind that door is a big secret that goes all the way back before WWII.

Passed from the Germans to the French and owned by the Americans during the Cold War this bunker, resting below a hill of sandstone, should survive for the next 1,000 years. The Americans closed the bunker in the early 90's and gave it back to the original land owner. Imagine, men in uniform showing up at your door with a box full of keys and saying, "Here ya go!" The bunker was left in perfect condition but because of the elements it has begun to decay.

When in an underground bunker why not take a moment and have some fun with an external flash and a blue gel. There was a mold problem I wore a dentist mask but for dramatic effect and to have a little fun one of our tour participants brought their gas mask.
Some of the rooms are still in such great condition that it was easy to forget I was underground.  Until next adventure. Thanks for taking a look.

A Nice Day For A Walk https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2013/8/a-nice-day-for-a-long-walk Golden hour in Weilerbach Germany with the beautiful and super talented Mallorie from GND Photography and her family. I love my new little town. Five minutes walk straight ahead is a beautiful pond and playground, five minutes to the left and there are endless fields and walking paths, forests behind me and shopping to the right. It feels like home.

FCK Rolling Devils https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2013/8/fck-rolling-devils Meet the Rolling Devils a professional wheelchair basketball team in Kaiserslautern Germany. Wheelchair basketball has been around since the 1940’s. Most of the rules are the same as basketball, the court and hoop are standard size. A time limit has been added to score a basket making the game fast passed and action packed.  If you want to see the Rolling Devils in action here is their schedule.

Thailand Fest in Bad Homburg https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2013/8/thailand-fest-in-bad-homburg My first post from Germany and it's all about Thailand! This 10-10 I had the wonderful adventure of attending the annual Thailand Festival in Bad Homburg. The sights, the tastes and smells, even a temple built by the King of Thailand as a gift when he visited Germany. I started with the tastes, sweet mango fruit on rice and a watermelon smoothie, I then enjoyed the sights, dancers, singers and martial artists. My most enjoyable 30 minutes was the aroma oil back massage. How could I not, I mean it would almost be impolite. Until next 10-10 have a look at what  Michelle has been up to.

Hilton Head Island https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2013/7/hilton-head-island It was air mattresses and takeout for too long and my back and stomach were starting to feel it. The family and I still had a week before our flight to Germany but our lease was up, so instead of staying at some dingy hotel off the highway we went ahead and booked a few nights out at Hilton Head Island South Carolina. It wasn't really planned I was looking for cabins by Thurmond lake or a nice bed and breakfast maybe, I was actually calling about a different location when the travel agent said, "O wow... I think I have something for you. O wow, you are going to like this. How about staying on Hilton Head Island?"

Thank you Mr. Travel Agent. Hilton Head lighthouse in Harbour Town.

Dog friendly Coligny Beach and the Big Dipper.

I absolutely loved that the island had very little light pollution. There are no street lights, which allows for very special star gazing opportunities and also benefits the local wildlife.

The most dangerous thing in these marsh wetlands I was told by our zip-line guides Pablo and Nate are the oysters. They are apparently razer sharp.

Aboard the  Gypsy. We saw dolphins, had a lesson about crabs and learned how to throw a fishing net.

The first mate holding a female crab, you can tell because of her 'nail polish' he told us.

My back feels great my stomach is full of island goodness. Can I just stay here forever? Alas it's time for a new chapter but I have a feeling I'll be back.

10-10 Meet Charlie O'Neal https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2013/7/10-10-meet-charlie-oneal On the 10th of the month 10 photographers take 10 photos of what they did that day. Check out Micah and her 'hot' hubby o baby! http://hewett24654.c4.cmdwebsites.com/blog/?p=380

On the 10th of July. My family and I had the great treat of being invited to Charlie's home for a BBQ. Since we were living out of take out boxes and on air beds because of move overseas,  Charlie's hospitality could not have come at a better time.

I meet Charlie from a local photography Facebook page and knew he did great landscape and nature photos but had no idea he was such a great cook.

After an amazing Southern home cooked meal Charlie took us out to his stained glass studio.

What skill and patents went into these lamps amazes me. Each lamp took several 40 hour work weeks to finish.

Thank you Charlie, the photographer, the artist, the chef, the retired cop, and thank you for being such a great friend.

4th of July Hello and Goodbye https://www.evacreelphotography.com/blog/2013/7/4th-of-july-hello-and-goodbye It's been an emotional week. The movers have packed up our house and it's the first 4th of July we have head in the USA in a decade. It's been a sweet 10 months in Georgia, almost as sweet as their tea; now it's time to trade the red, white, and blue for gold, red, and black as the Army moves us across the ocean back to Germany. I'll miss closets and breakfasts at Cracker Barrel. But most of all I'll miss the amazing people I met during our stay. It's a terribly wonderful feeling knowing you are going to miss someone. Terrible because of the hurt in my chest but wonderful because my heart is so much bigger because of them. You know who you are, I love you! Wipe those tears, clear that throat. In Germany they don't say goodbye. So until we see you again. Keep it epic!
